All the Doctors and Nurses work to appointments
Demand for appointments has increased over the years; we are still trying to keep up with demand and have made major changes to the appointment system to provide a better service.
Routine appointments
Routine appointments are pre-bookable with the doctor of your choice, however our receptionists will advise you if they are on holiday, in which case there will be a longer wait. These are for non-urgent matters and for patients who prefer to have continuity by seeing the doctor who has been looking after an on-going problem.
"Book on the day" appointments
Approximately half of all Dr appointments are designated "Book on the day" appointments. These are released at the opening of each session i.e. each morning at 8.00 am, and for afternoon appointments, at 2:00pm.
"Extra" appointments
If all the 'Book on the Day' appointments have been taken, and your problem is clinically urgent, you may be asked to attend at the end of surgery. Certain problems can be allocated to "Extras" by the reception staff directly, for example a request for emergency contraception. In other cases the receptionist will need to discuss with the Dr-on-call whether or not the problem justifies an emergency slot. Patients attending as "extras" will usually be seen in order of arrival unless there are special circumstances. Please be patient, as clinics often over-run.
GOLDEN RULES FOR APPOINTMENTS
If you decide that your appointment is no longer needed, please ring up and cancel so that someone else can have the appointment instead.
Does more than one family member need to see the doctor? If so, please make a separate appointment for each person.
If you have several different problems to discuss, please make a longer appointment or separate appointments. Your doctor has only 10 minutes for each routine consultation, which includes recording the consultation and any prescriptions.
If there is a possibility you have a contagious illness, you will be asked to wait in one of the treatment rooms away from the main waiting area. Similarly, if you are undergoing chemotherapy, please advise the receptionist you will place you in one of the treatment rooms.
Repeat prescriptions can be ordered by any of the following methods:
1. Drop off your "Repeat" (the right-hand side of the prescription print-out, on white paper), either at reception, in the repeats box in the foyer. If we are closed, you can post it through the letterbox at the bottom of the main doors. If doing the latter we recommend you place your repeat in an envelope for confidentiality reasons.
2. By the Royal mail to: Crystal Peaks Medical Centre, 15 Peaks Mount, Sheffield S20 7HZ
3. By using the "Keep Repeat" system available through Lloyds Chemists at Crystal Peaks shopping centre. This involves phoning Lloyds to request your items.
4. By fax to: 0114 251 0954. We cannot be liable if you dial the wrong number in error.
In the future...5. The practice is participating in the e-prescriptions programme that is being implemented by the government. It is hoped this will make ordering repeats easier and more "paper-light".
Prescriptions are generally available within 48 working hours
Prescription collection points
Most people collect their prescription from the surgery. However, did you know that you can nominate a local pharmacy from where you would like to pick up your prescription?
These chemists are willing to pick up an ordered prescription and have it made up ready for the patient to collect directly from the pharmacy.
Please let reception know if you would like your nominated chemist to do this- e.g. by writing this on the bottom of your next "Repeat". Unless we hear otherwise from you, we will always send your repeat to that chemist for collection. You will also have to contact the chemist directly to request this service as they are unable to do so without your authorisation.
Requesting non-repeat items
Sometimes you may wish to request a medicine which is no longer or has never been on your "Repeat". You may request this item(s), and where it is clinically appropriate, we will issue a prescription for you. However for clinical reasons, this may be refused and you will be asked to come in to discuss this with a Dr.
Holidays and living abroad
In most cases, we issue 2-monthly prescriptions. However if you are likely to run out of medication whilst on holiday, please order more in advance but write the reason for doing so on the Repeat, otherwise the request may be refused.
Increasingly some of us are living overseas for part of the year. Please note that it is NHS policy that a maximum of 3 months of medicines can be prescribed in advance
Generic Policy
Every drug has 2 names. It can be very confusing. For example NUROFEN is a trade (or "proprietary") name, the "generic" name is IBUPROFEN.
It is Government policy to increase the rate of generic prescribing, in order to get the best value for the public. There are a few instances where it is important that drugs are not prescribed generically, for example some epilepsy medicines. The Practice will endeavour to prescribe generically, this means that the name on your "Repeat" will be different from the prominent proprietary name on the box and that the proprietary name may change from time to time, depending on the manufacturer.
